Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Agricultural extension services are an essential component of modernizing the agricultural sector, particularly in rural areas like Jalingo Local Government, Taraba State. These services offer farmers the opportunity to receive expert advice, training, and guidance on best farming practices, crop management, pest control, and the use of modern agricultural technologies. However, despite the availability of agricultural extension services in many rural areas, there is often a lack of awareness and participation among farmers. Newspapers, as a widely consumed form of print media, play a crucial role in bridging this information gap by disseminating knowledge about agricultural extension services. In Jalingo, local newspapers serve as a communication channel that connects farmers with agricultural service providers, government agencies, and policy-makers (Aliyu & Abdullahi, 2023). Through newspaper articles, advertisements, and features, farmers are exposed to the benefits of engaging with extension services and are informed about the latest agricultural programs and initiatives that can enhance their productivity and livelihood. This study aims to explore the role of newspapers in promoting agricultural extension services in Jalingo, with a focus on how they influence farmers’ awareness and participation in these services.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Jalingo, there remains a significant gap in the uptake of agricultural extension services, with many small-scale farmers unaware of the available resources or skeptical of their effectiveness. This issue is compounded by the lack of targeted communication strategies aimed at reaching rural farmers. While there are several government initiatives and programs designed to assist farmers through extension services, the challenge lies in effectively communicating these services to the target audience. Newspapers can play a pivotal role in overcoming this communication challenge; however, the extent to which local newspapers contribute to promoting agricultural extension services remains underexplored. The problem is that, despite the potential role of newspapers, farmers may not be sufficiently informed or persuaded to take advantage of these services. This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of newspapers in promoting agricultural extension services and their impact on farmers’ decisions to engage with these programs.
